About the Artist

As an artist, Karyn's focus is on contemporary abstract fusions of African and European influences. Rich and earthy, lyrical and dreamy, intellectual and intense, her work shows a discernable theme, but no two pieces are the same.

Karyn strives to combine a sophisticated colour sense with rhythmic, joyful and intricate decorative detail. Her approach to traditional objects such as bowls, vases, vessels and platters results in extraordinary functional art that is meant to be used and enjoyed.

Working with white stoneware clay, Karyn's ceramic forms are mostly wheel thrown. With her ceramic underglaze and glaze mediums Karyn uses a variety of painting techniques , including impasto, wash, distressing, sponging, sgraffito and stippling.

The result is a richness of colour and depth of design achievable only by the hand of a skilled and imaginative artist.

"I am a completely self taught artist and potter and have been working professionally for 9 years. My work emerges expressively from the automatism of my subconscious mind, and is characterised by a balance between spontaneous gesture, continual control and decorative detail. I view my art as a physical and spiritual experience that satisfies my great need for aesthetic and intellectual intensity."
