About the Artist
"Everything I come across is looked at as a
potential ingredient for my creations. It is easier for me to blend
together such varied items as stain glass fragments, shells, Spanish
lace, feathers, crayon rubbings, and encaustic paint than to try to
work with just one medium. You might say my artwork is really the
platypus of the art world. Just as the platypus is a mix between
mammal and duck; my creations are a mix of collage and sculpture.
My fascination with stories, myths and legends is a major influence
on my art. I especially enjoy learning about the many gods and
goddesses and their special powers. I like to show that element and
interpret it in a contemporary way such as with "Senora del Pilar".
The idea for this piece comes from a church in Spain that was built
in Sargasso because of a vision from the holy Virgin Mary; I
depicted a modern Mary in a print dress coming out of the type of
pineapple ornament seen on the church in Saragossa, Spain."
