About the Artist:

Sarah McDonald was born in Adelaide, South Australia in 1974. After completing a degree in Art and Design Education, she worked as an artist and art teacher in Australia and the United Kingdom. It was while travelling that Sarah first saw the beauty and stories of history in old, derelict buildings.

Inspired by these images, Sarah uses oils to create her work, layer by layer, reproducing colours, patterns and textures while balancing lines, shapes and composition.

Each painting offers an opportunity to traverse landscapes, continents and seasons, and in each painting, there is a quality that evokes emotional responses from every viewer as they re-tell their own story, stirred by memories and images of their own past.

Sarah exhibits widely throughout Australia and her work can be found in commercial and private spaces where the rawness in her paintings forms a dynamic contrast against the apparent simplicity of modern society.

"I surround myself with images from my travels. I might see the colour of oxidised copper or a picture of a crumbling wall and from there, I paint - encouraged by memories and guided by instinct. Each piece reflects elements of architecture, a story and a journey."

"I was 1 of 10 Australians chosen to show in a group Australian Exhibition at Agora Gallery, Soho, New York in May 2005. I am now represented by an art dealer in New York, Clark Priftis Art."
