About the ArtistA native of Newburgh, NY, Mary Evelyn Whitehill is the great granddaughter of Thomas B. Pope, a Hudson River School artist of the 19th Century. She has a degree in Art History from Wells College, Aurora, New York and an MS degree in Library Science from SUNY, Albany, New York. She was introduced to the watercolor media by her German professor at Wells, but did not begin painting seriously until 1980. Whitehill works exclusively with watercolor and paints in a realistic style. She taught for several years at Barrett Art Center in Poughkeepsie, New York and Mt. St. Mary College extension courses in Newburgh, New York. She enjoys painting on site or "Plein Air" and has won many awards for her spontaneous impressions of the environment. In addition to her popular landscapes and florals, Whitehill has done hundreds of commissioned portraits of homes. Whitehill is a signature member of the Pennsylvania Watercolor Society, North East Watercolor Society, Salmagundi Club, Kent Art Association, Connecticut as well as Ridgefield, Connecticut, Southern Vermont Art Association, Manchester, Vermont, and Community Arts Association of Northern New Jersey, and the Catskill Art Association, New York. She is secretary of her local Art Association, Middletown Art Group. |
